Club Meeting News - 18 May 2021

Welcome

President Kevin welcomed members, guest speaker, Wendy Michaels, and other guests Elizabeth Jaeger, Ross Kretchmer, David Perabo, Sonya Mears, Rhondda Kingsbury and Sabina Allman.

Toast

Bob Farrar proposed a toast to the RC of Kathmandu. Chartered in 1959, their club has shared many joint projects with ours. Last April they asked us for assistance to help overcome problems associated with Covid-19 which is ravaging Nepal and our donation, together with a District grant, was able to go towards food packages for needy families, medical supplies and wash stands for local hospitals.

Announcements

President Kevin reported on the Taldumande Gala dinner which he attended together with several other members. It was a very successful evening which raised much needed funds for them.

Kim Wilkins reported the recent bookstall raised $646. He thanked all those members who volunteered to man the stall during the day. The next bookstall will be held on 20 June.

Sally O’Neill is still looking for a couple of volunteers for the next Bunnings BBQ to be held on Saturday, 29 May.

The quiz night scheduled for 24 June already has 8 tables booked, so if you are interested in attending, book now at www.trybooking.com/BRDMV .

Garth Carter spoke about Pride of Workmanship which is scheduled for 27 July. Please give consideration to someone you can nominate who could be worthy of receiving an award and let Garth know.
Guest Speaker - Wendy Michaels, OAM - On the Cast List

Ian Burnet introduced guest speaker Wendy Michaels, OAM. Wendy is an academic and Northbridge resident who was last year awarded an OAM for services to Women and the Dramatic Arts. She has lectured in Creative Writing and English Secondary Method at Newcastle University and is the author of some 30 books and hundreds of articles.

Wendy spoke about her life, most of which she has lived in Northbridge. She was one of several daughters whose father she described as Commander of a Petticoat brigade. He was in the film industry and worked on such films as On the Beach, Summer of the 17th Doll and Gallipoli. She spoke about the Northbridge Cinema and through her father’s work of how she had met movie stars such as Angela Lansbury, John Mills & Elizabeth Taylor.

Wendy also spoke of her desire to go into the performing arts but was banned from doing so by her father. She eventually became a teacher and taught drama. She spoke of her involvement in Social Justice, the Family Law Act of the 1970s which gave women more freedom, the role of women in public life and her research into Women and the Theatre. She has always had an interest in women writers across the genres and spoke of the hostility to women authors in the past.

Ian thanked Wendy for her informative talk.

Comedy Evening Raises Funds for Streetwork
129 people enjoyed a fun evening raising over $3,700 to assist our local Streetwork Charity.

Streetwork is a local community organisation, founded 41 years ago, working with 'at risk' young people affected by crime, mental health issues, violence, destructive relationships, social isolation, homelessness, those disengaged from school or with poor employment opportunities and those impacted by alcohol and substance abuse, to turn their lives around.

Thank you to our comedians Tommy Dean, Daniel Townes, Bruce Griffiths & Oliver Phommavanh for putting on a fabulous show & all our generous donors for supporting a worthwhile cause.

Northbridge Rotary Bookstall is Back in Business

Thanks to Northbridge Plaza management, the Northbridge Rotary Club bookstall is back in business at Northbridge Plaza on the third Sunday of every month from 9am to 5pm.

The Club is selling a range of adult fiction at $3 each plus childrens’ books at $2 each; all in mint condition.

Books can be purchased with cash or via credit card. As always, all of the money raised from these sales goes to a range of worthy causes.

THE 4 - WAY TEST of the things we say or do

1). Is it the TRUTH?

2). Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3). Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4). Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
