President's Message
Dear Rotarians,

I enjoyed our Club’s Christmas dinner on Tuesday and I hope you and partners enjoyed the evening too. Thank you to our organisers – Sally and Helen…job well done! The night was even more special as it marked the 40th anniversary of the chartering of our Club by Rotary International. We will celebrate the establishment of the Northbridge Rotary Club on February 6th at a special dinner to be help at Foy’s Restaurant in Kirribilli. To assist with arrangements for the night, please purchase your tickets as soon as possible by booking at  Rotary Northbridge's 40th Anniversary | Humanitix

With a small band of volunteers, Bob Farrar and Paul Sullivan organised another wonderful Golf Day Fundraiser last weekend. Weather was fine and a large field of 139 players participated. A very successful day with around $3,000 raised for our Rotary Charities. The day was another perfect opportunity to educate the community about the good work that Rotary does. Congratulations and thank you Bob and Paul.

And the Christmas Raffle ticket sales continue this weekend at the Plaza. Results for Week 1 (2-3 December) were promising. Thank you to the organising committee and others for getting this raffle off the ground. There were 36 ticket sales time slots up for grabs at the Plaza and  few weeks ago I suggested that with close to 50 members in our Club, we only need 36 volunteers to nominate themselves for a 2-hour shift…..not a hard ask. However my count shows that only 21 members volunteered and half of these are doing 2 shifts, with 1 member doing 3 shifts! I believe there are still some shifts available on next weekend – give Alan Hession a call to volunteer. I hope to see greater participation at our Bunnings BBQ on 6 January. Please register with Sally for a shift on that day. Also if any members have feedback on the raffle they would like to share so we can improve for next raffle, please send an email to me lkeighery01@gmail.com. Thank you.

Tuesday 12 December will be our final Weekly for 2023. Please remember that this meeting will be a breakfast meeting. Please try to make it along and ask a friend to join you; it will be a very special event and our guest speaker is Melanie Lewis President of Rotary Social Impact Network Club, District Chair of the Environment, and Regional Director of End Plastic Soup.  She established the D9685 EnviroClub Awards to recognise club efforts for the environment, and has recently developed an ‘awesomeness activation” card game that helps Rotarians engage in conversations and action to address biodiversity loss. Melanie is passionate about social innovation and connecting communities to nature; she has a Bachelors in Environmental Biology, a Masters in Research in Marine Ecology, and is currently completing her Doctorate in Climate Change Innovation Management. She works at the nexus of environmental protection, sustainable development, and knowledge coproduction. Her presentation will showcase Rotary’s global environmental initiative to end plastic soup.  You’ll learn about the problem of plastics and how youth ambassadors and Rotarians are sharing lessons to initiate place-based solutions through collaborative club projects and Global Grants. Melanie’s aim is for you to leave the session inspired to implement a project through the amazing mechanism we have to Create Hope in the World… Rotary! Please come along.

In December, RI President Gordon McInally will attend the UN COP28 climate change summit in Dubai. There, he will speak about the convergence of two global crises: climate and mental health. As the World Health Organization has noted, climate change worsens risk factors - such as disruptions to homes and livelihoods - for mental health problems. The emotional distress of a disaster also makes it difficult for people to recover and rebuild. In this article, Gordon and Shelterbox CEO, Sanj Srikanthan, explain that the words we choose to describe disasters matter.
