Club Meeting News - 27 September 2022

Welcome

President Rob welcomed members and Guest Speaker, Mark Anderson, Senior Co-ordinator of the Rotary Foundation.

Toast

Karin Eurell proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Bali, Nusa Dua. Chartered in 1992, it was the first English speaking Rotary Club in Bali. Their Cleft Lip and Palate project has been going since 1994. They are engaged in a variety of community and vocational service projects ranging from blood banks to prosthetic legs and support for HIV infected children as well as scholarships for the underprivileged and disabled.

Announcements

John Garrett advised only 20 Australian Geographic magazines received to date. He wants more!! Fay Petrou mentioned Facebook Market place is a source of hundreds of them. These magazines will be used to assist with the education of indigenous children.

Peter Antaw advised next week’s meeting will be a Partners’ Night. He will be speaking about the club’s 1992 major project of the Lighting of the Suspension Bridge to celebrate its centenary. Many Rotarians and their partners were involved in this massive project.

Eleanor Chevor spoke about the upcoming CPR training. There are still plenty of vacancies and she asked members to advertise the training sessions far and wide in the community.

Eleanor also warned members of a car registration plate scam. She recently received several official notices in the mail relating to speeding offences, driving whilst talking on her mobile and for leaving 2 petrol stations without paying. She visited a Services NSW office with the notices and after investigation it transpired that her number plates had been replicated and put on other vehicles used by obviously nefarious people. She said that she had to replace her registration plates, change her insurance as well as having to make a statement to the Police. On top of all this, she discovered that her E-toll statement had numerous amounts which were not hers. She advised everyone to be wary of this scam.

Guest Speaker - Mark Anderson - The Rotary Foundation

Richard McDonald introduced Mark Anderson, senior Co-Ordinator Rotary Foundation. Mark has been involved in Rotary since 1976. He is married to Lyn and has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. He is a member of Beecroft Rotary Club and is also a malt whiskey collector.

Mark talked about Rotary Foundation which helps Rotary members increase their Impact through service, scholarship and training. The Rotary Foundation has moved to Norwest and the Vision Statement on wall at the office is “People of Action”.

Mark said that Rotary appears to the public to have become the fundraiser for other charities rather than project driven. He advised that 76% of donations to the Rotary Foundation comes from individuals. Mark posed the question, “Are we a fund raising organisation or a Humanitarian Services Organisation”. Our members were 50/50 in their response.

He believes the public are generally unaware of what other things Rotary undertakes other than what they see – running Bunnings BBQs and otherwise fundraising.

Mark said that the Beecroft Club looked into developing community services. He advised we need to expand our reach and expand our effort and should be project based rather than fundraising based. He talked about the benefits of increased understanding, building relationships, trust, participation and community involvement. Community Assessment Tools can be downloaded from the Rotary Website and is of great assistance. Beecroft Club has increased its membership and now has many younger members and a more diverse group of members. The club did an assessment of the community and developed their projects based on community need. The money they raise is spent in Beecroft and the surplus sent to Rotary Foundation to go towards Rotary grants.

Richard McDonald thanked Mark for his informative talk about the Rotary Foundation, which gave us a lot of food for thought.

A little bit of Humour ...

Mercedes for Sale @ $1

Someone put up this advertisement. No one believed it could be true, so no one responded, except for an old man who went to see the car.

The lady actually sold him the Merc, which had done just 12,000km, for just $1 and handed him the papers and the keys. Deal done!

As the old man was leaving, he said, "I’ll die of suspense if you don't tell me why this car was sold so cheaply."

The lady replied, "I am legally required to fulfill the Will of my dear departed, now deceased, husband where it is written that the money received from the sale of his Mercedes shall go to his Secretary ..."

Justice shall not only be done, it must be seen to be done.
