Rotary Club Meeting 5 February 2019

Welcome

President Ranald welcomed all members to the club. There was no guest speaker, nor any guests as it was a Club Committees meeting.

Toast

Bob Edwards gave a toast to the RC of Huatulco, Mexico. Bob explained that he and Margaret transited the Panama Canal in his boat on Christmas Day, 2006, after which they spend 5 weeks cruising through Central America to Mexico. It was a difficult passage as they were traveling through extremely poor countries such as Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala, through what, at times, were gale force winds. On arrival in the port of Huatulco, they met Rotarian Are Run, and through him about 15 other Rotarians from Canada and USA who live part of the year in Mexico, away from the cold winters of North America. Through fundraising within their own home clubs, they undertook various projects, one of which was a "dentist’s chair on a trailer" which had a generator for lights, suction and other equipment. With the aid of local female dentists, they would take the trailer to the poorer villages in the hills where they were able to provide dental services to villagers. Another of their projects was the purchase of a container load of wheelchairs for distribution to needy people.

Announcements

Bob Farrar spoke about the Rotary Golf Day to be held on 23 February and called for volunteers to assist on the day. A number of members volunteered immediately.

Andrew Rennie reminded all members of a Charity Art Auction & Exhibition to be held at Gallery 307 from 2-17 February, all the proceeds from which will be donated to Neuroblastoma Australia - https://www.gallery307artschool.com.au/exhibitions .

Kim Wilkins thanked everyone who worked on the bookstall on 27 Jan and which made $500+. The book box at the Plaza is at capacity so another bookstall is proposed for Sunday, 17 February to help reduce the number of books that need to be stored. Kim will be sending out an email shortly calling for volunteers.

Kevin Tattrie advised that the Rotoract Club of North Sydney would be having its first meeting in the offices of Trent Zimmerman, MP on 20 February. Brochures are being dropped at local businesses to attract prospective members aged in the 20-30 age group.

Sally O’Neill advised the next Bunnings BBQ is on 24 February at Bunnings Chatswood. Please let Sally know if you are able to volunteer for the roster.

Fay Petrou spoke about the upcoming District Conference in Newcastle. Several members have already registered for the conference and Fay invited more members to attend what should be a very interesting and informative conference, with some fun included.

President Ranald advised that the board had decided to cancel the annual Seniors Lunch. The costs have increased over the years, the logistics are becoming difficult and the board feels the funds could be better spent on more urgent projects such as drought relief.

John Turner advised that he would be training more people on the tablet and square in preparation for the upcoming Fireworks. Please contact John if you would like to be trained, and more importantly, that you will be here for the Fireworks to implement that training.

Peter Grinter advised that the Rostrum Voice of Youth would be held in March at Ascham School. Volunteers are needed to assist with this programme so please contact Peter if you would like to be involved.  All members who have helped in past years have found it very interesting and rewarding to see the calibre of talent of the students involved.

President Ranald spoke briefly about the video we have been asked by District Rotary to share with members about a possible proposed merger between district 9675 and 9685. The 10 minute video was then shown to those present. Members were asked to think about the pros and cons of such a merger, and over the next few months discussion would take place about the worth or otherwise of such a proposal.

Following the showing of the video, members disbanded into their various committees to discuss plans for the year.

Sergeant’s Session

The Sergeant’s Session was conducted by Malcolm Lye, who after an absence of quite some time in the job, but who was obviously keeping a log of all the misdemeanors since his last session, managed to extract quite a bit of coinage from those present.
