Club Meeting News - 2 August 2022

Welcome
President Rob Coote welcomed everyone and in particular our guests, Michelle & Justin Barry, Sumit Mathur and Enzo Smith. Our Guest Speaker, John Moriarty, is presenting via Zoom.

Toast

John Turner proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Scarborough, WA.  Regarded as a friendly Club of 45 members the club meets at 6.45am on a Thursday at the Surf Club. The club’s major fundraising activity is the Sunday SwapMart at Karrinyup Shopping Centre which has raised over $3 mil since 1989. Funds raised have provided for wheelchairs for kids in Africa as well as supported local charities.

Announcements

Eleanor Chevor advised that in relation to the Food Drive 34 boxes have been delivered to Lismore via a Lismore Removalist. Eleanor thanked David Robertson for the use of his garage for storage of the donations until they we were able to be despatched.

Peter Grinter reported on the success last Saturday afternoon of the Rostrum Voice of Youth and spoke about how talented the year 10 and 12 speakers were. He especially thanked the 11 Rotarians who came along, and said that the Program reflected Northbridge Rotary Club as the sponsor.

Sally O’Neill advised that the Bunnings BBQ raised $2,250 and that the sausage sandwiches have now been increased from $2.50 to $3.50.

Sally also advised that 13 members are interested in going to see The Mousetrap and 7 members to see Moulin Rouge and asked for any other interested members contact her ASAP as she will be purchasing tickets in the near future.

Rob Coote inducted our new member Michelle Barry to the Club. All the members warmly welcomed Michelle as a member.

Luke Keighery advised that one of Paul Sullivan’s friends is now leading the footy tipping and that Kim Wilkins is running 2nd.  Only 5 more weeks left.

Luke also spoke about his recent trip to East Timor to inspect our water project and said how proud he is of being associated with Northbridge Rotary and the project. The project collects spring water 4km away which is pumped into storage tanks in the village and then distributed to different areas of the village. A full presentation will be made to members soon.

Guest Speaker - John Moriarty, AM - John Moriarty Foundation

Ranald Stewart introduced our guest speaker on Zoom, John Moriarty, AM, Co-founder of the Moriarty Foundation. John is an Aboriginal Australian artist, government advisor, soccer player, campaigner for Aboriginal rights, and has received a UNESCO achievement award. The presentation took the form of a Q & A with Peter McNair facilitating the session.

John Kundereri Moriarty was born in Borroloola, in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is part of the stolen generation.

Peter McNair asked a number of questions of John:
  1. Is Indi Kindi, with which Rotary was involved, still operating? Indi Kindi is a ground-breaking early years solution integrating health, well-being and education for children under five in remote Aboriginal communities. John advised that the project is still going with great success.
  2. Peter asked about John’s early years having been taken away as a 4-year-old from his family. John said he did not see his mother for another 10 years. He lived with other children and did not have a lot of freedom. In 1970 John graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Arts and was later a recipient of a Churchill Fellowship.
  3. Peter asked John about his football career. John said he played for South Australia First Division teams and in 1960 was selected to play his first game for the state. John was the first recognised Indigenous Australian to be selected for a national soccer team.
  4. John, together with his wife Ros Moriarty, established the John Moriarty Football Foundation which focuses on grassroots participation and awards scholarships to young Indigenous soccer players. John believes greatly in education through sport.
  5. Peter asked John to talk about his design studio established with Ros in 1983, with the Balarinji brand being the most prominent component. He was immensely honoured to win the Australian Design Prize in 2021. In 1994 he was commissioned by Qantas to design artwork for the body of a Boeing 747-400. Since that time Balarinji has been providing the design for Qantas’ Flying Art Series.
  6. John spoke of the Moriarty Foundation which he co-founded with his wife, Ros. The Foundation enables families and communities to unlock their children’s potential through locally led initiatives. The Foundation receives very little funding from Governments and relies on donations and volunteers. The foundation recently received $15000 funding from UNESCO. Its focus is on supporting key attachment relationships, providing wellness education, building on cultural and family strength, being locally led and building local staff capacity.
Ranald Stewart thanked John for his talk and commented how hard it is to summarise the many achievements John has fulfilled in his lifetime.

A little bit of humour ....

Senior Sayings …
  • I’m responsible for what I say, not what you understand.
  • Commonsense is like deodorant – the people who need it the most never use it.
  • My tolerance for idiots is extremely low these days. I used to have some immunity built up, but obviously there’s a new strain out there.
  • It’s not age that bothers me, it’s the side effects.
  • As I watch this generation try and rewrite our history, one thing I’m sure of is that it will be misspelled and have no punctuation.
  • As I've aged, people think I've become lazy. The truth is I’m just being more energy efficient.
  • I haven't got anything done today. I've been in the Produce Department tying to open this stupid plastic bag!
  • Turns out that being a "senior" is mostly googling how to do stuff.
  • I want to be 18 again and ruin my life differently. I have new ideas.
  • I’m on two diets – I wasn’t getting enough food on one.
  • My mind is like an internet browser. At least 19 open tabs, 3 of them are frozen, and I have no clue where the music is coming from.
  • Hard to believe I once had a phone attached to a wall, and when it rang, I picked it up without knowing who was calling.
  • Apparently RSVP-ing to a wedding invitation with “maybe next time” isn’t the correct response.
  • Sometimes the Universe puts you in the same situation again to see if you’re still a dumbass!

NORTHBRIDGE COMMUNITY FIREWORKS RETURN A SUCCESS

Many would have seen the North Shore skyline light up with the Northbridge Rotary Club’s annual community fireworks on the evening of 7 May.  And what a spectacular afternoon and evening of fun, food and entertainment it was.

Well done to all those involved.

The event, attended by some 4,000 people, raised close to $50,000 which the Northbridge Rotary Club will use to support a range of worthy charities and causes.

Our special thanks to Willoughby  City Council and to Northbridge Plaza for what is now our 30th year of joint partnership with them for this event. Northbridge Rotary Club President, John Gidney, is photographed presenting a plaque to the Plaza management commemorating this achievement.

THE 4 - WAY TEST of the things we say or do

1). Is it the TRUTH?

2). Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3). Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4). Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
