Club Meeting News - 20 September 2022

Welcome

President Rob Coote welcomed everyone, with a special welcome to Hilary McDonald, the wife of our member, and the evening's Speaker, Richard McDonald.

Toast

Barry Anderson proposed the toast to the Rotary Club of Nambucca Valley. The Club commenced operations in 1 July 2020 when the Nambucca Heads and Macksville Rotary Clubs merged. They had been chartered in 1954 and 1955 respectively and co-operated for 65 years until declining membership forced amalgamation. They now have 16 members. Our Club worked with them after the 2019 bushfires, and bushfire recovery remains a key project. Other current projects include Wallace Lake Murals, a tourist attraction and an opportunity for local artists to display their talent; Sunshine Wheels a cycling service for the aged; and Shore Track BBQ, raising funds for a charity which encourages wayward boys into work.

Announcements

David Perabo announced that the Book Stall raised $300, with the next one to be held 16 October. He also asked all members able to use the Square for payments to download the new application. This is important for both the Book Stall and the BBQ fundraisers.

Eleanor Chevor reminded everyone about the free CPR and First Aid Training sessions which will run at Northbridge Golf Club with 6 different 2.5-hour sessions. Each session is limited to 24 people so bookings are essential. Eleanor is looking to broaden the invitation to other organisations.

John Garrett reminded members that he is looking for donations of Australian Geographics to donate to Streetwork.

Guest Speaker - Richard McDonald - The Australian Shareholders' Association (ASA)

Ranald Stewart introduced our Speaker, Richard McDonald, who was to speak on The Australian Shareholders' Association (ASA). As background, Richard said that after 37 years flying with Qantas, he joined the ASA on his retirement, and after 8 years, he was appointed State Chairman.

The ASA is a not-for-profit organisation with 5,000 members Australia wide and an additional 12,000 users accessing ASA’s website. The ASA monitors the ASX 200 and an additional 93 companies in NSW. This is done by 40 Monitors, each doing 2 or 3 companies. When a company’s Annual Report is issued, the Monitor meets with the company Chairman, the Executive and/or Directors. They decide questions to be put at the AGM. This has had the effect of improving corporate governance. Areas of focus are: remuneration, environment, sustainability, capital management.

ASA also asks shareholders to give them their proxies. 4m were given to them pre-Covid. These can be open or specific.

The ASA has 6 paid employees so has to raise funds. One way they do this is to run 2-day conferences.

Ranald thanked Richard for a most interesting talk. He said it was an important subject, and people need to be educated about their shares. We all have superannuation, and he thanked the ASA for what they do.

This week's little bit of humour are a few one liners courtesy of Don Landers:
  • I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport.
  • I've been in love with the same woman for 49 years! If my wife ever finds out, she'll kill me!
  • What are three words a woman never wants to hear when she's making love? "Honey, I'm home!"
  • Someone stole all my credit cards, but I won't be reporting it. The thief spends less than my wife did.
  • My wife and I went to a hotel where we got a waterbed. My wife called it the Dead Sea.
  • Doctor: "You'll live to be 60!" Patient: "I am 60!" Doctor: "See! What did I tell you?"
  • Patient: "I have a ringing in my ears." Doctor: "Don't answer it!"
  • A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says, "You've been brought here for drinking." The drunk says "Okay, let's get started."
