Club Meeting News 22 March 2022

Welcome

President Jon welcomed our guest speaker, Ian Burnet, one of our members, and welcomed back again Richard McDonald.

Toast

Eleanor Chevor proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Lismore. The club was chartered 90 years ago and meets Thursday nights at the Bowling Club. They support mental health. The Rotary members themselves have suffered greatly during the floods and some may never go back to their homes. The BBQ and bookstall money and tonight’s donations will be going to the Rotary Club of Wauchope who will be delivering provisions to Lismore and where possible will be buying those provisions from local businesses.

Announcements

President Jon advised that the minutes from the last Board meeting have been emailed to all members.

Jon advised that long time member Tony Clifford has resigned from the club after 15 years of membership and spoke about his contribution to the club, particularly his work in the International Area.

Jon mentioned that he, Rob Coote, Helen Gulson and David Perabo attended the District Conference last weekend.

Kim Wilkins advised that the bookstall had raised over $400, and also that he requires someone to replace him as co-ordinator of the bookstall going forward. Could members please consider volunteering for this position.

Alan Hession updated the members on the plans for the upcoming fireworks and advised that everything is proceeding well.

Liz Grey mentioned that any Ukraine donations made to the charity account are not tax deductible. However, if you require a tax deduction the donation needs to be deposited in the Benevolent Fund to go towards Disaster Relief or Shelterbox. Details of the account number for this fund have recently been emailed to all members by Karin Eurell.

Ian Burnet mentioned the Nasa Tenggara Indonesian dinner is to be held on 9 May at the Dougherty Centre at Chatswood. Tickets are $50 each. Raffle tickets will be on the tables at Rotary over the next couple of weeks.

Luke Keighery advised that Helen Gulson is ahead in the Footy Tipping Comp. He also thanked everyone for their support of his 200km walk to raise money for Interplast. An amount in excess $5200 was raised.

Guest Speaker - Ian Burnet - East & West Timor - Why are they Divided?

Ian Burnet discussed why the Island of Timor is divided into three parts. East Timor or Timor Leste which was originally Portuguese; West Timor or Indonesian Timor which was originally Dutch; and the enclave of Oecusse which was originally ruled by a group who have been variously described as free traders, freebooters, swashbucklers, corsairs or privateers.

Known as the Larantuqueiros after their base in Larantuka this group made a profitable trade in sandalwood which was highly valued by the Chinese for their joss sticks for over 200 years.

The Larantuquerios resisted any attempts by both the Portuguese and the Dutch to take control of their trade or their territory and the Dutch based themselves in Kupang on the western end of the island and the Portuguese based themselves in Dili on the eastern end of the island.

Unfortunately, Oecusse was devastated by the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1974 and then devastated again when the Indonesians left after Timor Leste voted for their independence in 1989. Ian showed us pictures of his visit to Oecusse in 2010.

Liz thanked Ian for his very informative presentation.

PRESS RELEASE - NORTHBRIDGE FIREWORKS RETURN TO CONTINUE A 35 YEAR COMMUNITY TRADITION
Saturday 7th May 2022 will mark the 35th year of Northbridge’s landmark annual night of Fireworks on Northbridge Oval, Sailors Bay Road, organised by the Rotary Club of Northbridge.

This year also marks the 30th year of partnership between the Rotary Club of Northbridge and Northbridge Plaza, which is again the major sponsor of this spectacular evening of entertainment.

Together, Northbridge Plaza and The Rotary Club of Northbridge have hosted monthly bookstalls, food drives, bucket appeals, Christmas raffles, the Tree of Joy at Christmas as well as the annual community fireworks. These events are critical in allowing Rotary to support a diverse range of causes locally and beyond.
In recent times, community attendance at the event has grown to over 4,000 and funds raised for local charities have been close to $50,000.

Gates will open at 4 PM and the FIREWORKS display will start at approximately 7 PM.
Entry: Families with an adult: $40      Adults: $15      Children: $5

Credit card facilities will be available at the entry gate on Sailors Bay Road, at the food area and at the entertainment/rides area.

This year there are exciting new refreshment options being provided by a number of food vans as well as rides and other entertainment for the children.  These include the traditional Rural Fire Service display, live music by local schools, face painting donated by Forsyth Real Estate, a raffle with multiple prizes and more.

Families and friends from the length and breadth of Sydney are invited to join us on the day to support those who are in need.  We guarantee you will have a ball!  Bring a rug and buy a pizza, paella, satay, hot chips, coffee or gelato from our food vans then relax and soak up the community atmosphere.

5/6th February Tonga Volcano & Tsunami Relief Appeal

Thank you to all shoppers who donated to the Northbridge Rotary Club a bucket appeal on the weekend of 5/6 February, at Northbridge Shopping Plaza, raising funds for those in Tonga who have lost their homes, possessions and in some case family members to the recent volcano and tsunami.

Special thanks to 2 school boys Will Hyde & his friend Alex (pictured) who helped with our appeal. Both Wil and Alex have spent time in Tonga as part of a post school volunteer program, but unfortunately were pulled back early due to COVID, hence their interest.  They have been in contact with the school principal in Tonga to let them know what is being done here to support them.
