Announcements

Barry Anderson, on behalf of International Director Luke Keighery, spoke about the international project championed by Ian Burnet for which a $6200 district grant has been approved for a water project to build water tanks in Nusa Tengarra, East Indonesia. They are hopeful that a grant for a water project in Timor L’Este will be approved soon. Barry thanked Liz Grey for the enormous effort she put in in preparing the grant application.

David Robertson spoke about his upcoming trip to Fiji and brought along a sample of the bandages, swabs and other items he is taking with him. He thanked Karin, Derek and Doctours for providing the equipment.

Thank You
Don Landers received a letter from ShelterBox thanking members for their contributions. Club members have contributed over $10,000 todate and have been recognised as Emerald Club Supporters of ShelterBox Australia. As at the end of 2018 ShelterBox had provided emergency shelter and vital support to 210,000 people who had lost everything through conflict or natural disaster.

DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that the Club hosted our first incoming Exchange Student in 1985-1986? She was Colleen Bailey from the U.S.A. P.P. Barry Anderson was her counsellor and Peter and Audrey Hodgson were one of the 4 families who hosted Colleen. Throughout the history of the Club, a total of 15 Exchange Students have been hosted by the Club.

Joke of the Week from Don Landers
Last Wednesday a passenger in a taxi heading for the airport leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the shaking driver said "Are you OK? I'm so sorry, but you scared the living daylights out of me."
The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, "I didn't realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly."
The driver replied "No, no, I'm the one who is sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for 25 years."

President's Message
I was thrilled last Tuesday to preside over a fabulous meeting of our Rotary Club. We had 22 guests joining with members to enjoy Louise Johnson and Janet Webb from the Roseville Music Society telling us about the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and then enthralling us with the Harp and the Flute. Magic! Their passion for playing, and love of their instruments, shone through and the repartee between them was delightful.
We will look into getting a group together to attend one of their concerts.

Last Saturday I attended the District 9685 Presidents’ Meeting at Hornsby RSL. Despite the room being freezing, it was an interesting meeting and I was able to catch up with District Governor Kalma, and other Presidents.
I also met with Neil Howie of the Roseville Chase Rotary Club and we agreed to look into having a joint event with local Clubs. Our intention is to have a Charity night at a local cinema to see the pre-release of the film Ride Like a Girl. It tells the story of Michelle Payne, a determined young girl from Ballarat, who defied the odds to be the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. It is a great film for all of us to get together and enjoy the emotions of one of the great moments in horse racing history. It stars Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill.

Membership continues to be an issue for Rotary but the District is making real progress. The President of the new Club Brisbane Waters was at his first Presidents’ meeting reporting his new Club was ready to start with 23 members and more to come! Work is already advanced for yet another new Club, this time in Lithgow.

Another project in the pipeline is called Ride the Train to end Polio. Apart from the repeat of the ‘ride’ theme, it has been run before with a group of Rotarians starting out at 4.32 am at Epping station, visiting all of the 187 stations on the Sydney rail network, and finishing at Cronulla station at 11.50 pm. They were met at many stations along the way by Rotarians who joined them for short rides, for coffee and company, plus donations. They raised $240,000 which, when matched by the Gates Foundation, provided $720,000 to end Polio.

This year there will be 195 stations because of the new Metro, and it is programmed for 24 October. The Rotary Club of Beecroft is championing the event. We will see if we should get involved.

Peter Antaw

The Main Act

Our club was elevated to new heights with the performance of delightful music by two musicians at the top of their profession: Janet Webb (Flute) and Louise Johnson (Harp).

We listened to duets and individual performances as their repertoire ranged across genres of music from classical, including a combined fascinating medley from “Carmen”, to Louise’s delightful jazz rendition of “As Time Goes By” on the harp.

Janet and Louise interspersed their music with stories about their instruments – including Fred the harp - and their experiences, especially with orchestras and conductors.  Their amusing stories and banter showed a harmony of music, spirit and dedication that sees them tutoring budding young players and driving other projects to support and propagate their types of music and their instruments
Such is their dedication to their craft that they stepped in to rescue and revitalise the Roseville Music Club in 2018.

Stories
Peter Takes Over (Again)!

The Northbridge Rotary Club held its Changeover Dinner recently at the Gunners Barracks in Mosman.  The Presidential chains of office were handed over to Peter Antaw who will serve as President for the next 4 months. This is an unusual  year where the presidential role will be shared by three people.

Peter Antaw was President of the Club in 2002-3 and, at that time, there were just 2 females amongst the 58 members.  In the article below titled ‘Peter takes over’, he expressed the need for more women in the Club.  This has certainly been achieved.  There are now 13 female members and they were captured on film relaxing and having fun at the dinner.

Later in the evening, Paul Harris Awards were presented to Rob Coote, Kevin Tattrie and Liz Grey for their exceptional contribution to the Club over the past 3+ years.
The Rotary Club of Northbridge is one of the largest and most dynamic Clubs and new members and guests are always welcome.  For more details, please contact email: secretary@northbridgerotary.com.au
