Days for Girls / Sustainable Villages

Judith Charnaud is a Rotarian who has lived in East Timor for the past 14 years, in a very remote area called Oecusse .

This is a small part of East Timor which is not actually attached to East Timor but rather it is situated in Indonesian West Timor! . Judy will speak about plans for a SewAID project in Oecusse (teaching a variety of sewing skills, including school uniforms, dressmaking, school curriculums) and Days for Girls. Women and girls in remote areas lose 5 days of education every month, simply because they lack access to basic hygiene options. Days for Girls gives these days back through sustainable feminine hygiene kits that last for 2-4 years.

Club Meeting News

Welcome

President Peter welcomed all members and guests DG Kalma McLellan and Bob Kaye Smith from North Ryde Rotary, and Beau Villaneuva.

Mike Cocks returned from his travels overseas and said that he attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of St Ives in Cornwall, having met one of its members in the street. He handed over a banner from that club to President Peter. St Ives is a famous centre for artists and one of the club’s fundraising activities is to have local artists donate some of their works which the club then sells off to raise funds.

Toast:

Kevin Tattrie gave a toast to the Rotary Club of Manila, Philippines. The club is 100 years old, it being the first club in Asia and chartered in 1919. It currently has a membership of 224 with 50-70 people attending regular meetings. It is credited with having brought the scouting movement to the Philippines.

Announcements:

Andrew Rennie spoke about Gallery 307’s upcoming annual Northbridge Adult Art Prize and the Youth Art Prize. The exhibition opening is on Saturday 7 September and there are free wellness workshops taking place on 28 September for both adults and children.

John Turner talked about mobile phone security, specifically the popular Camscanner which scans documents with your phone. He advised the App is very unsafe with security issues and not to use it.

Luke Keighery reported on the Trivia Night for Mary’s House held last Saturday by RC Chatswood Sunrise. It was a successful and fun night with 2 Northbridge tables, with one of them winning the trivia and the other winning a lot of the raffles.

President Peter spoke about the upcoming Wellington project and advised that Nestle has kindly agreed to donate 1000 muesli bars and jelly babies to contribute to the children’s day out at the zoo.

If you would like to be involved in going to Wellington, and accompanying the children on their zoo outing, please contact Rob Coote.  To date more than 12 club members have indicated they will be going.
President's Message

On Tuesday our District Governor Kalma McLennan visited our Club as part of her program of visits to all Clubs in our District. The position of DG requires enormous dedication and Kalma has taken on her role with great enthusiasm.

Kalma only joined Rotary in 2010 with the Ryde Club. She has served on their Board as PR Director, Club Service Director, Membership Director, Club President (2014-15) and followed up as her Club’s Treasurer. She has engaged with District Rotary and is now our DG. Not surprisingly Kalma is a Paul Harris Fellow.

Our Board members (15) met with Kalma before our meeting and we briefed her about our Rotary programs. We are a big Board and it was a very impressive show of the strength and professionalism of our Club with our presentation completed within the hour with time for questions. We had a lot to tell and it was apparent to Kalma what a hands on and active Club we are.

Later, at our Club meeting, Kalma explained her name, derived by an artistic mother from the names of her two grandmothers, Kathleen & Mabel. Very clever, and a unique and attractive name!

Kalma told our meeting about the evolution of new Clubs and the need to innovate. E Clubs are growing and 138 RYLA alumni have recently expressed interest in a Club based on 24hrs a day blogging. Another Club has changed from weekly dinner meetings Club to alternate dinner/breakfast meetings. We are also innovating with the recent introduction of a $5 no meal option and we continue to look for opportunities to have more events with social interaction. Kalma was very impressed with the huge numbers of friends of Rotary that help out with the Fireworks.

Kalma also explained that the biggest issue facing Rotary in a crowded world is to have a prominent public profile and how we need to get our branding right and consistent. One matter under active consideration is the joining together of the two Sydney Districts of Rotary to give us much more fire power in the media.

Kind Regards Peter Antaw
Guest Speaker

District Governor Kalma McLennan visited our Club. Before our meeting she met with our board & later at our meeting addressed members and answered questions.

DID YOU KNOW

The Club organised a gala event on 17th October 1992 to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Suspension Bridge. Thousands attended the event in Tunks Park throughout the day which culminated at night with a fireworks display on the Bridge and then the official turning on of the lights, lighting the Bridge which had been installed by the then Sydney County Council arranged by our current President, Peter Antaw.

For a little levity ....

A 60 year old billionaire walked into the bar with his gorgeous 25 year old wife.
Friend:  How did she come to marry you?
Billionaire:  I lied about my age!
Friend:  You told her you were 45?
Billionaire:  No!  I told her I was 90!
Stories
Rotary Bridge Day
The Club’s third annual Bridge Day was held on Friday 23 August and was a great success, with 19 tables of bridge players and a net profit of $4,062 made. This means just over $2,000 to each of the beneficiary charities for the day - Rotarians Against Malaria - PNG, and Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale.

The event was held at Northbridge Golf Club, and the service was excellent. Our bridge playing guests loved the venue and the sandwich lunch provided. Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney officially opened the event and told everyone what wonderful projects the Club has been, and is, involved in together with details of where the funds raised are spent. Then two of our Rotarians, Susan Law and Barry Anderson, spoke about the charities of the day, prompting our guests to buy even more raffle tickets. We are very grateful for the many prizes donated to the Raffle by generous Rotarians.

Thank you to the 10 Rotarians who volunteered their help on the day and the ladies who made the delicious cakes and slices for our guests’ lunch. Finally, thanks to Fay and her friend Filanphie who ran the Gift table, showing off Filanphie’s talents as an artist and cook of beautiful chocolates and fudges and to Amy Brittain for donating her homemade jams and bath salts.
