Rotary Club Meeting 20th June 2017

Welcome

President Paul welcomed members, guests Eleanor Chevor, Pam Clifford and Malcolm Lye, and our speaker for the evening, club member Tony Clifford.

Toast

Doug Herridge proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Northlakes, Toukley.

Announcements

President Paul reminded those members who have volunteered to undertake the RSA course to register and do so ASAP.

John Bolton thanked all members for paying their dues on time.  There are a couple of payments for which there were no names so please check to make sure your payment was sent with a name attached.

Peter Grinter thanked all those who helped out at the Rostrum Voice of Youth last weekend.  400 NSW students participated and the heats for the NSW finals saw a student from Merewether high win the junior section and a student from PLC Sydney win the senior section.

Valda Andrews advised that 3 laptops from the SEE funds were purchased for use by Talumande.  The history of these funds is that $50,000 was bequeathed to NRC by a previous member, the interest of which was to be used.  The interest rates over the past few years have been so insignificant that it was decided that the capital would start to be spent to help those in need.

President Paul showed off the proposed new Club Shirts which will be available to members in due course.

President Paul also announced that after 16 years as a Rotarian, Ian Jones is retiring from the Club. He thanked Ian for his many contributions to the club during his time as a member.

Also this evening Eleanor Chevor was inducted
and welcomed as the newest member of Northbridge Rotary Club.
Congratulations to Eleanor.

Last week John Garrett spoke to us about some of our Fireworks proceeds going to the AIME mentor program. AIME was established in 2005 by John Bancroft, who is now only 32 years old, to help bridge the divide between University students and underprivileged children from our indigenous population by partnering university students with young indigenous students.  Starting with 25 kids and 25 mentors,  1 school and 1 partner university, it has grown to 6686 mentees, 2255 mentors, 340 schools and 18 university partners.  The AIME program has changed the lives of these students and results have shown a 7-fold economic return and produced the largest volunteer movement of university students of its kind.

Guest Speaker - Tony Clifford - Home Built Aircraft

President Paul introduced club member Tony Clifford who spoke to us about his project of building a small plane in his backyard in Northbridge.  Having planned and thought about building an aircraft for over 20 years, Tony finally decided to take on the challenge of a Sonex Light Aircraft a few years ago.  It is a single engine, mainly aluminium aircraft capable of flying with a pilot and one passenger.  He has spent some 2000 hours on the build, yet to be completed. The kit was 70% raw materials, when delivered in a large box by truck, and he has had to manufacture many of the parts himself to construct the plane.  Preparing an inventory of the parts took a few weeks in itself and with 104 planning sheets, but no instruction manual, he said the project was intellectually challenging, fun and gives him an enormous sense of satisfaction.  He is hoping to complete the build by the end of this year after which the completed sections will be taken to an airfield at Warnervale or Maitland to be assembled and inspected and approved by a test pilot from the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) before take off.  Once completed, the aircraft will have a flight range of 440 miles.

Community - BowelCare Program 2017

As part of our community programs we are advising you of the Rotary BowelCare Program and that the BowelCare kits will be on sale at participating pharmacies for two months commencing 1st April, 2017.

Check with your local pharmacy or go to our website http://www.bowelcare.org.au for a listing of all participating pharmacies in your area.

This year’s BowelCare kit will cost only $15.00. This price includes pathology testing, with notification of your result to both yourself and your nominated doctor. Your result will be issued within 30 days of your test kit being received by pathology. Please use the pre-paid envelope provided within the kit package.
Throughout Australia, Rotary has chosen to update to the latest technology to screen for occult blood using a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT). This test is very easy to use, and requires no dietary or medication restrictions. The kit is a two day sampling, requiring one sample from two different days. Full detailed instructions are included within the kit package.

If you have any difficulty obtaining our BowelCare test kit, please phone the BowelCare office on (02) 4349 5555.

We trust that you will continue to look after your health by participating in our annual Rotary BowelCare Program.

Community - Rotary Lunch for Senior Citizens
Northbridge Rotary Club held another successful Senior’s luncheon on Saturday 3 March 2017 at St Marks Hall in Tunks Street Northbridge.

Inclement weather did not deter 80 guests from attending the annual lunch for seniors in our community. They were attended by over 30 hardworking Rotarians and friends, who served a delicious three course meal with  appropriate refreshments.

Guests were entertained by a talented young local violinist and they received gifts provided by Northbridge Compounding Pharmacy or a complimentary coffee card from the Inner Cravings Café  in the Northbridge Plaza.

A special prize was awarded to Mr  Geoff Lamb who, at 103 years of age, was the oldest  in attendance.
Mayor Giles-Gidney welcomed the guests on matters of interest, including Council merger developments. This was followed by an entertaining question and answer session on the reasons why she entered politics, moderated by Rotarian Peter McNair. The Mayor also thanked Rotary for their service to the community and all their work to make the lunch a success.

The following email from one of our guests summarised the day:

Dear Peter,

Please convey my sincere thanks to all Rotarians, photographer, musician and volunteers serving drinks, for their generosity of their time and hard work and to Pat for the lift.

Food was delicious and was served with smile. This type of function gives seniors an opportunity to meet people and discuss their interests and build up friendships.

Thanks.
Kind Regards,

Shirin(kanji).

Once again, the lunch was an entertaining and successful day for all concerned.

International - The Fijians Loved Our Books

Our Club on an ongoing basis collects unwanted second hand books at Northbridge Plaza via its book box.
The Club received a request from a Fijian school for children’s books.

Travelling on a cruise to the Pacific Islands Northbridge Rotarian Peter Antaw received permission to carry an additional 2 cases of kids’ books that were requested by a school child in Fiji.
International - Nepal Water Tank
The Rotary Club of Northbridge came to the rescue when a village in Nepal was totally destroyed by the 2016 earthquake.

The Club raised over $18,000 to build 12 houses and renamed the village to Northbridge Nepal.

With the left over monies the village then built a water tank that supplied drinking water for the whole village which included the only school. Again we would like to thank the Northbridge community for their generosity, as do the villages.

Northbridge Rotary Club will continue to support projects like this one as it really does save lives.
