Welcome

President Peter welcomed members and  guests

Toast:
Therese Stubbs gave a toast to the Rotary Club of Wahroonga.

Announcements:

Luke Keighery again talked about the upcoming Chatswood Sunrise’s Trivia Night in support of Mary’s House to be held on 31 August. Please contact Luke if you would like to be added to the Rotary tables already booked.

Liz Grey spoke about the Donors Tour to Nusa Tengarra, East Indonesia mentioned last week by guest speaker Stephanie Heighes. It has been organized for 22-29 November 2019 and will cost participants between $2000-3000.
Liz also mentioned a theatre party organised by the Friends of Letofoho to aid the Rotary projects in Letofoho, Timor L’Este. To be held at the Roseville Cinema on Friday, 13 September, it is for a release of the film Downton Abbey. The cost is $25 per person and tickets can be purchased through www.trybooking.com/535559.

President Peter spoke about the ravages of the current drought situation in the country and invited Susan Law to speak about a proposed fundraising venture.  Susan has been speaking with friends in the country about the forms of assistance needed, and in consultation with the Rotary Club of Wellington, they have come up with a project to take every one of the 744 school children in and around Wellington, both primary and secondary, to Dubbo Zoo for a day where they can be spoiled and experience some respite from the life they have been living due to the drought. Susan talked about various alternatives being discussed and was wholeheartedly supported by those present in this initiative.

What Goes Around Goes Around

Our Club manages a special trust fund called SEEs to help young disadvantaged young people educate and train themselves to enter the workforce. Previously homeless young people supported and housed by Taldumande Youth Services at North Sydney have been the prime recipients of the fund. To date 38 young people have benefitted from attending employment training programs, TAFE or receiving other assistance including text books, course materials and laptop computers.

After much pain sourcing computers from retail outlets we found out about WorkVentures at Mascot. We were give a lot of advice and were able to buy fully refurbished modern laptops complete with the latest software.WorkVentures are a not-for-profit IT social enterprise company refurbishing computers to as-new using young trainees. They resell their computers at bargain prices and provide extensive technical support. Realizing that our laptops were for Taldumande they have generously donated six units with the promise to donate more.

When Jon Gidney found out that WorkVentures would like donations of second hand computers he organised his company Greenhill & Co to donate 24 laptop computers.

Greenhill had checked out WorkVentures and felt satisfied that they would 'clean' their computers and if necessary dispose of them safely.

It has been a win, win all round. Greenhill is pleased to securely and environmentally dispose of old equipment, WorkVentures has obtained stock for resale and IT skilling of their  young trainees, and the formerly homeless young people of Taldumande get modern equipment to progress their studies to eventually enter the workforce

August is Club Membership Month

At the Club Forum on 4th June there were several ‘take away’ points noted on Membership after some lively discussion.
12 questions were put to the members via a power point presentation commencing with the questions ‘What is required to keep RC of Northbridge relevant to our community’, ‘how can we attract members’, etc.
  • Each individual should focus on our public image to promote Rotary.
  • At each of our fundraising events such as Fireworks, BBQs, Book Sales & bucket appeals, we need to explain to our supporters that 100% of all money raised goes to a specific charity or charities such as helping homeless youth at Streetwork, Taldumande, or to specific projects like drought relief or to disaster areas.
  • We need to promote Pride of Workmanship – involve the local businesspeople as they can tell others of the Rotary story.
  • We need to work alongside local schools and sporting bodies.
  • We need to communicate with others about our work with youth with the WGH mock interview initiative and youth leadership training courses.
  • Need to tell others that our meetings are fun nights with excellent speakers and that we host fun activities such as the Comedy for a Cause.
  • We need to keep our community aware of the great things that Rotary is doing and how individuals within our community can be involved by being Friends of Rotary.
  • We can promote ourselves by having car bumper stickers and inserting bookmarks into the Book Sale books.
  • Determine a potential member’s interest, e.g. their favourite charity and how they raise funds for their charity.
  • We need to adopt an elevator pitch to break the ice with a potential member.

A Little Humour & Trivia to Raise a Smile - from Don Landers

The Loving Husband.....
A man had two of the most expensive tickets for the Rugby World Cup Final. After he sat down a woman close by asked if anyone would be using the seat next to him. "No ..... ," he replied.
"That’s incredible ........ !" said the woman, "who in their right mind would buy a seat like this for the Cup Final, the biggest sporting event of the Rugby World, and not bother to turn up?

"Well" said the man, "the seat actually belongs to me. My wife was supposed to come with me but unfortunately she passed away. This is the first Cup Final we haven't been to together since we got married."
"Oh . . .. I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. Couldn't you find someone else to take the seat, a friend, or relative, or even a neighbour?"

The man shakes his head .. .. .

"No ..... . They're all at the funeral."

DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that the Club sponsored our first attendee to a RYLA Camp in 1985-1986. She was Caroline Johnson, the daughter of local residents Jim & Sue Johnson. In all, the Club has sponsored a total of 56 attendees to RYLA Camps, including the children of a number of our past and present members.

Peter Takes Over (Again)!

The Northbridge Rotary Club held its Changeover Dinner recently at the Gunners Barracks in Mosman.  The Presidential chains of office were handed over to Peter Antaw who will serve as President for the next 4 months. This is an unusual  year where the presidential role will be shared by three people.

Peter Antaw was President of the Club in 2002-3 and, at that time, there were just 2 females amongst the 58 members.  In the article below titled ‘Peter takes over’, he expressed the need for more women in the Club.  This has certainly been achieved.  There are now 13 female members and they were captured on film relaxing and having fun at the dinner.

Later in the evening, Paul Harris Awards were presented to Rob Coote, Kevin Tattrie and Liz Grey for their exceptional contribution to the Club over the past 3+ years.
The Rotary Club of Northbridge is one of the largest and most dynamic Clubs and new members and guests are always welcome.  For more details, please contact email: secretary@northbridgerotary.com.au
