Club Meeting News

Welcome

President Peter Grinter welcomed all club members to his first meeting as president, and introduced guest speaker Bijuli Timila and his wife Sunita.

Toast

John Bolton gave a toast to the Rotary Club of Taree, and to all the clubs in that area of NSW experiencing bushfires. The RC of Taree was chartered in May 1937 when the population of the town was 4,500. They have since gone on to sponsor other clubs including Port Macquarie, Wauhope, Foster-Tuncurry and Wingham and were involved in the building of the Hospital at Kokoda.

Announcements

A Bushfire Bucket Appeal will be held on 16/17 November at Northbridge Plaza.

Barry Anderson spoke about the possibility of coordinating with Nambucca & Macksville Rotary clubs with regards to helping bushfire victims as that area has been devastated by the fires. President Peter will speak with the president of the Nambucca club.

Ranald Stewart reminded members to book early for the District Conference to be held in Wollongong in March. A number of members have expressed interest in attending and it would be nice to have a good contingent going along.

Susan Law said that she had taken 8 large boxes of the collected toiletries to Taldumunde who were very appreciative of our collection. They will be given to young people coming into Taldumunde.

Susan also said Wellington RC was extremely pleased and thankful for our support both financially and physically with the Zoo project. Twenty-seven Northbridge RC members, partners and friends travelled to Wellington to help on the BBQs and meet their club members. It is encouraging to hear that other Rotary clubs are now undertaking similar projects. Susan also said that several Wellington club members were going to come to Sydney to help out with our Fireworks next year!

Luke Keighery spoke about his upcoming trip to East Timor with Barry Anderson from 19-23 November to help get the Ermera pipeline project underway. As well as installation of the pipeline, sanitation and hygiene training will be given to the locals to get the best results out of the project.

Amy Brittain spoke about the “Buy from the Bush” project which is aimed at encouraging city folk to buy their Christmas presents from rural towns and areas where the drought is devastating the communities. Every dollar injected into these communities helps keep them alive. Check out https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/buyfromthebush/ .

Rob Coote said that the Tree of Joy will be set up at the Plaza from 15 November for the community to leave Christmas gifts under the tree for less fortunate children.

President Peter said he had attended the 13th Annual Inoue Yasushi Awards Ceremony at USyd organized by Masanori Ohtani. He said it was a most interesting evening.

A reminder that our Rotary Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, 7 December 2019 so please make sure the date is in your diary.
Invitations will be despatched shortly!

President's Message

This was my first night as President, and what an action packed night it was! Our main focus of the evening was the forthcoming Bushfire Bucket Appeal and it was very heartening to see so many members volunteering on the spot to make up the roster, which is to be coordinated by John Garrett. Barry Anderson offered support through his contacts, and Kim Wilkins kindly agreed to postpone the bookstall. Karin Eurell started putting some great signage together later in the evening.

Before the meeting David Robertson mentioned to some of us a very useful App called - Fires Near Me NSW - which tells you when a bushfire has been reported near to your nominated location.

Our guest speaker on the evening was Bijuli Timila supported by his wife Sunita who spoke to us about the devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015 and showed us pictures of the damage caused. Bijuli was very appreciative of the financial assistance which has been given by our Club to the rebuilding program.

In relation to the drought, Amy Brittain brought to our attention useful Instagram accounts which will enable city folk to support our country cousins by buying Christmas presents from the sites.

Luke Keighery and Barry Anderson are off to East Timor later in the week to make sure that our water supply project is properly constructed and that the funds are spent appropriately.

I mentioned that the Club had received a North Sydney Community Award courtesy of Trent Zimmerman, which will be presented to Peter Antaw on 21 November.

Paul Sullivan spoke regarding his visit to Wellington with John Garrett and their wives, and then topped this off with a very successful wine auction.

Lastly, Ian Burnet is having his book launch of The Tasman Map at Glebe books this coming Thursday.

We are off to a flying start with what will no doubt be a busy 4 months.

Peter Grinter

Guest Speaker - Bijuli Timila - After the 2015 Nepal Earthquake

Our guest speaker this week was Bijuli Timila who was accompanied by his wife Sunita. They are visiting Australia from Nepal and spending time with family here. Bijuli – a Rotarian - was introduced by Karin Eurell. Bijuli’s presentation was titled “School & Community Health Program Kavre Nepal”. The presentation commenced with a message of greetings from Rotary in Nepal. Nepal is a nation of 30 million people (mainly Hindu and Buddhist) located between China and India. Bijuli told us that the best time to visit Nepal is September to December.

In 2015 a devastating 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal causing incredible destruction with around 9,000 people dying. RCN, Doctours and the Scheer Memorial Hospital joined forces to assist in the aftermath. Doctours arranged medical expertise, and medical supplies and equipment were sourced and disaster relief was provided. With the support of RC of Northbridge, drinking water tanks were installed and other infrastructure provided. Bijuli expressed his thanks to RCN for assisting the recovery process.

Following a brief Q&A, Luke Keighery moved a vote of thanks to Bijuli.

Luke Keighery

DID YOU KNOW

Whilst the Club had looked at RYPEN from time to time over the years it was not until 2015 that the Club really became involved with the program. Peter Antaw, one of our current presidential troika, was then the Director of Youth Services and due to certain changes in the staff at Willoughby Girls High School having occurred, the Club had been able to cement and improve relations with the School. At that time, following the amalgamation of our then District with the adjoining District covering parts of the Blue Mountains, the concept of running 2 camps a year, one in summer and one in winter, had been established This enabled us to have no difficulty in obtaining suitable nominees to attend the various camps and to date we have been able to sponsor a total of 19 young ladies to attend and reap the benefit of so doing.
