Club Meeting News 12 July 2022

Welcome

PP Peter Antaw stood in for President Rob who was unwell. He welcomed everyone, especially our guests, Mina Howard, our District Governor for 2022/23, Rotarians Sue & Mike Kirke from WA, friends of Rhondda Kingsbury, and a special welcome back to Paul Sullivan following his WA travels. He also welcomed again Michelle Barry and another prospective member, Enzo Smith who was recommended by Andrew Maggio to come visit the club.

Toast

Ranald Stewart gave the Toast to the Rotary Multinational Club of Kiev, Ukraine. It was founded in 2006 with a split of Ukrainians and expatriate. The English-speaking Club has 15-20 members, men and women. Some projects completed include placing computers in schools, sponsoring 10 children in educational activities and purchasing a baby incubator for a local hospital.

Announcements

David Perabo announced the Book Stall is to be held Sunday 17 July. He is still looking for Volunteers for the 8-11am shift.

Eleanor reminded everyone about the Food Drive on Saturday 23 July. More Rotarians were needed to fill the Roster for the day. After some concern about getting the food collected to those most in need in Lismore, Eleanor has secured transport through the NSW State Government after talking to our local member Tim James.

Peter Grinter reminded members that the National finals of Rostrum Voice of Youth are to take place on Saturday 30 July at Shore School, North Sydney from 1.30pm. Anyone wishing to attend should let him know. Peter is to be an adjudicator on the day.

As a special matter, PP Jon presented an award to Helen Gulson as she was unable to attend the Changeover Dinner. The award was the Community Cup, an award presented to a member who best represents community spirit. All members applauded this recognition of Helen.

Rhondda introduced her guests Sue & Mike Kirke, who are her daughter’s parents-in-law. They belong to the Mandurah Club, WA, raising funds through Golf Days and an annual Duck Race. They have also been very involved in the Student Exchange Programme for many years.

Guest Speaker - District Governor Mina Howard

PP Peter introduced our Speaker, DG Mina Howard. He spoke of her amazing activities within and beyond the Rotary movement over many, many years. She has been a public school teacher for 43 years and, apart from Rotary, has been involved with the following organisations:
  • Australian Army Reserve
  • Royal Australian Engineers
  • Blackheath/Mt Victoria RFS
  • Mt Victoria Community Assoc
She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Blackheath since 2006 and has served in many roles including being as its first female President.
As our DG for the year ahead, Mina spoke to the following:
  • The importance of making Rotarians feel comfortable in their Club.
  • A suggestion that a Rotarian read an article out of RDU or the RI site each week at the meeting.
  • The large number of learning modules on the Rotary Learning Centre in My Rotary, which requires each of us to open a My Rotary Account.
  • The common interest groups in Rotary Fellowships, e.g. Stamp collecting, Brews Australian enjoy worldwide. Opportunities for Singles, Action Groups and Sustainability Groups.
Finally, Mina asked us all to write down on two bits of paper one thing we liked about our Club and one we didn’t like. The papers were collected and the results will be discussed at a future meeting. Mina was very impressed by the activity of the Northbridge club and the projects it undertakes.

A little bit of humour ....

From Eleanor -  a quote from the film Lost Illusions: Two critics watch Jesus walk on water - one critic says "see I told you he couldn’t swim!"

And a contribution from Peter G.

NORTHBRIDGE COMMUNITY FIREWORKS RETURN A SUCCESS

Many would have seen the North Shore skyline light up with the Northbridge Rotary Club’s annual community fireworks on the evening of 7 May.  And what a spectacular afternoon and evening of fun, food and entertainment it was.

Well done to all those involved.

The event, attended by some 4,000 people, raised close to $50,000 which the Northbridge Rotary Club will use to support a range of worthy charities and causes.

Our special thanks to Willoughby  City Council and to Northbridge Plaza for what is now our 30th year of joint partnership with them for this event. Northbridge Rotary Club President, John Gidney, is photographed presenting a plaque to the Plaza management commemorating this achievement.
