Rotary Club Meeting January 17th 2016

Introduction

President Paul welcomed all members, and our guest speaker, Sharon Edington, Rotary Peace Fellow.

Toast
Ian Jones proposed a toast to the Rotary E-club, Greater South Oz.  Part of District 9500, it was formed following the demise of the Rotary Club of Kangaroo Island.  It is made up of members from South Australia and the NT.  Meetings are held online, and people from anywhere in the world can join this club. The club raises funds for projects in Cambodia and last year welcomed an exchange student.

Announcements

President Paul thanked Derek Matz and Karen Eurell (with help from Sally O’Neill and Malcolm Lye) for their hospitality in hosting the annual Christmas party in their home in December.

President Paul announced he had received the resignation from the club of Yvette Boulos and Ross Pickard.  Don Landers moved a motion to grant Ross Pickard honorary membership of the club after his 27 years of service.  The motion was seconded and unanimously passed.

President Paul advised that next week will be the Club Forum where matters about the club will be discussed.  He asked everyone to consider matters to discuss such as the format of club meetings, how often we meet, membership issues, charities to support, fundraising, participation, etc.

Bob Edwards informed the meeting that performances of “The Carnival”, being organised to raise funds for the renovation of The Haven Amphitheatre, is on at The Concourse and suggested it would be worth attending.

Bob is also looking at arranging a group booking “Spirit of Anzac” at Darling Harbour in April and asked for anyone interested in attending to let him know.

Peter McNair reminded members that the Seniors Lunch will be held on Saturday, 4 March so please note that in your diaries.

Kim Wilkins is looking at organising a group tour of the ABC Studio at Ultimo on Wed, 15 Feb.  Cost is $9 or $8/seniors and will last about an hour. Let Kim know if you are interested.

Kim also asked if anyone was interested in being part of a regular walking group to let him know.

Kevin Tattrie spoke about the Youth programmes.  RYLA finished this week and the participants will be presenting at Rotary at the 31 January meeting.  He also spoke about Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC) which is for Year 10 students to go to Canberra for a week in May to visit the Parliament, the Parliamentary Museum, the Press Gallery, etc. to learn about how our country works.  It will mean being away from school for a week, but if anyone knows of any Y10 students who would be interested in applying, please let Kevin know.

Peter Antaw advised that Liz Grey has had a request from Rotary Club of Suva for books. He is going to Fiji on a cruise and is happy to take books but needs to borrow suitcases in which to transport them so let him know if you can help.

John Weingarth advised that the sign has gone up on the newly named “McCurrich Cut”, the pathway between Minimbah & Dalmeny Roads, in honour of the late Martin McCurrich.

John Bolton reminded everyone that memberships are now past due.

Rob Coote advised the Fireworks will be held on 13 May and planning will commence now.

Guest Speaker

Peter McNair introduced the guest speaker, Sharon Edington, Rotary Peace Fellow who works for an NGO, Act for Peace.

Sharon spoke of the aim of the Peace Fellowship which is to identify and invest in peace builders by way of education. This Rotary Masters programme is run at 6 universities around the world and applicants must have field experience prior to studying.  She studied at Bradford University in the UK and has worked in Africa, the Middle East and PNG among other places.  She has worked with refugees and spoke of the changes that can be made by peace workers.
There are thousands of applicants each year but approximately 60 people are selected for the course.  Sharon spoke of the people with whom she has worked and gave many examples of the differences made across the world by Peace Fellowship holders.  She was very appreciative of Rotary’s contribution and said it was a good investment which is definitely paying off in peace building.

John Garrett thanked Sharon for her very interesting talk and to hear what the Peace Fellowship has enabled her to do is very inspiring.
Stories
Youth - Taldumande Youth Refuge - Supporter Afternoon Tea

On Friday 11th November a special afternoon tea was held at Neutral Bay, one of a number of Taldumandi Youth Refuges, to thank community leaders and the many supporters of the charity, in particular local Rotary Clubs for their ongoing practical support, e.g. painting, gardening, construction of outdoor pergola and other repairs and maintenance.

The NSW Government provides the physical assets (i.e. houses) and salaries of related staff however the organisation must rely on the community to provide essential maintenance.

Virginia Howard (Chairman of the Taldumande Board) was the guest speaker.
She thanked supporters in particular representatives of the Rotary club of Northbridge, Mosman, and North Sydney Sunrise for their invaluable assistance.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to:

Noel Phelan (Northbridge)
Peter Young (Mosman)
John Taylor (North Sydney Sunrise)

Those in attendance were then addressed by two extraordinarily impressive young women who recounted their recent life experiences as clients and how their lives had been turned around through the assistance and support of Taldumandi.

International - Rotary Club of Northbridge Supports Aquaponics Initiative in Vanuatu

When Vanuatu was devastated by cyclone Pam, the Rotary Club of Northbridge raised $2,200 in a bucket appeal at Northbridge Plaza.  The Club has partnered with the Rotary Club of Currumbin-Coolangatta-Tweed which has a number of active projects in Vanuatu, and which particularly aim to build local capacity rather than perpetuating a welfare dependent mentality.

Northbridge Club decided to support a project which involves the introduction of Aquaponics to help create sustainable small business opportunities in remote villages. The Currumbin-Coolangatta-Tweed Club has partnered with the Vanuatu Agricultural College in order to bring this about. The country's Minister for Agriculture has taken a personal interest in this project, and the first training session has been delivered through the Agricultural College (pictured).

The Northbridge Club also provided a manual bore water pump, filter and tippy tap (pictured) so that the children at the Matantas school can now wash their hands.  Previously the nearest water source was 45 minutes away, and health and hygiene issues were an everyday event.  The pump also supplies water to a bush shower for the boarders at the school.

Many thanks to Chantal Dunbar of the Rotary Club of Currumbin-Coolangatta-Tweed who has initiated these projects and many others, and has changes countless lives in Vanuatu now and into the future.

Community Service - Helping Brain Damaged Kids & Young Adults

Several young North Shore people with brain injuries will be helped to recover using a new recumbent tricycle donated from funds raised jointly by Northbridge Rotary Club and Manmos Cycle Group.

The new tricycle was presented to Gordon-based charity Fresh Tracks in September. The charity’s CEO Alan Lawrence was “over the moon”, with the donation bringing the total number of tricycles at the charity to seven.

“These specially-made three-wheeler trikes are designed for the disabled to ride, as the pedals can be adjusted to be hand-propelled and there are gears on the hand grip to suit each individual,” Alan said. “If the rider can only steer then there are handle bars for a carer to push the bike. Another advantage is that the rider can attach their feet to the pedals so that their legs move with the rotating wheels.

Alan noted that, because of the trikes, several people in the group can now move their legs and have become more mobile and independent. The tricycles also brings a huge amount of excitement, fun and freedom for all that have the opportunity to ride them.

Northbridge Rotary President Paul Sullivan congratulated Alan on the fantastic work being done at Fresh Tracks, and thanked him for his service to the disabled community.

The new recumbent tricycle was presented to Fresh Tracks’ CEO Alan Lawrence by Northbridge Rotarians Paul Sullivan and Bob Farrar, and by Tony Reeve from the Manmos Cycle Group
