Club Meeting News - 23 August 2022

Welcome

President Rob Coote welcomed all members, our guest speaker Barry Anderson and guests Len & Barbara Antcliff, Michael & Grace Dureau, Jo Cocks and Barbara Anderson.

Toast

David Perabo proposed a toast to the RC of Portogruaro in Venice, Italy.

Announcements

David Perabo reported on the results of the latest bookstall. The area where the bookstall is usually held is to change from next month as a new tenant will be moving into that space. The likely space will be further up the top of the Plaza. Next bookstall is 18 September.

Mike Cocks advised that for anyone interested, the Welsh Choir will be singing at St Peters Church, Blues Point Road, North Sydney at 2pm on 11 September.

Luke Keighery gave an update of the Footy Tipping competition which is heading towards the end of the season with not a lot of difference in points on the ladder amongst the leaders. This should make for a competitive run to the finish!

Guest Speaker - Member Behind the Badge
Barry Anderson - Planes, Cars, Court Cases & Rotary

Mike Cocks introduced guest speaker, our own Barry Anderson. Mike and Barry first met in London many years ago. Their families have been friends since that time. Barry is a Chartered Professional Engineer and Light Aircraft Pilot. He has been a member of Northbridge Rotary since 1984, and has served both on the Board and as President.

Barry spoke of his memories of being rushed, as a 5 year old, from Brisbane to Melbourne in 1941 to sit out WWII whilst his father was sent overseas as a war correspondent, of the war in Europe ending on his 10th birthday and of his lifelong interest in aeroplanes, having flown both model and full sized aircraft .

He outlined his 19 years in the auto industry – Nuffield, BMC and Leyland -  starting with his 1938 Morris Eight (and rebuilding its engine in his bedroom), then his time in Experimental Engineering before his role in the concept and mechanical design of the P76 and then the car that never was – the P82.

He continued with his work on the Barra Sonobuoy, with Joy Manufacturing (coal mining machines) as Engineering Manager and then his consulting in automotive, military and finally his forensic work as an expert witness for the courts.

He told of the early years of his marriage to Barbara, living in Northbridge where they made friends for life and then their move to Castlecrag for 18 years while maintaining their Northbridge connections.

Barry outlined the activities of the club’s first 10 years, the series of “firsts” that occurred and his involvement in those early years. He concluded his talk with a series of 5 questions he thought members might ask.

As there was time to answer only one of these, Barry has provided his prepared answers to these questions which you can find by clicking on this link -

Mike thanked Barry for a most informative presentation about his work, family and community life.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

  • Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
  • Why the early bird gets the worm;
  • Life isn't always fair;
  • And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepchildren - I Know My Rights; I Want It Now; Someone Else Is To Blame; I'm A Victim; and Pay me for Doing Nothing.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone.
