Rotary Club Meeting 11 December 2018

Welcome

PP Ranald Stewart welcomed all members and guests Angela Parlane and Clare Wilde.

Toast
Garth Carter proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Brookfield.  Chartered in 2003 with the support of the Rotary Club of Kenmore, they meet every 3rd Wed of the month at the Brookfield General Store, Brookfield and every 2nd Wed of the month at the Old Friary, Kenmore Hills. They have assisted the people of Vanuatu in the recovery in the aftermath of cycle Pam, and support the Equestrian Foundation for Disabled Children, the MS Society of QLD and Brisbane Legacy to name just a few projects. Fundraisers include hosting a Trivia Night in June and the Pullenvale Folk Festival.

Announcements
Jon Gidney reminded everyone of the Christmas Party to be held on Saturday, 15 December at 26 Narani Crescent, Northbridge from 6.00pm.

Rob Coote reported that “Clink for a Cause” raised around $2,500 and thanked everyone concerned for their efforts with this event.
Rob also spoke about last Sunday’s “Soar & Roar” event for Special Olympics which we supported. Rotary volunteers consisted of members from Northbridge, Chatswood, North Sydney & North Sydney Sunrise clubs who waved off some 40 cars and 70 motor cycles from both Kirribilli and Luna Park sites to promote and highlight Special Olympics. He thanked all the volunteers who contributed to such a successful event, and in particular Luke Keighery who addressed the bike riders prior to their departure. The Special Olympics representative commented that with the help of Rotary the event ran far smoother than last year.

Malcolm Lye spoke again about a possible visit to the Northbridge Freemasons as previously some members were keen to attend either a tour of the Lodge in early Feb or an ANZAC commemoration event on 10 April. Some 20 members indicated they would be interested in attending the ANZAC day activity so Malcolm will liaise with his contacts at the Freemasons to make arrangements.

President Ranald reminded those present that next week will be the last meeting for the year. Our first meeting in 2019 will be at a restaurant and details will be forthcoming shortly.

He also reminded everyone that PP John Turner and Sally O’Neill are available to work with committees on their Visioning plans which are to be completed for the next Board meeting.

Sergeant's Session
Fay Petrou sergeant’s session again extorted funds from the members present!

PP Paul Sullivan auctioned several bottles from his cellar, the proceeds of which were added to the funds raised on the night.
Guest Speaker - Members Behind the Badge
President Ranald introduced our two Members Behind the Badge – Amy Brittain and Don Landers.

Amy, the newest member of the Club, thanked everyone for being so welcoming from the first time she visited the club. Her inspiration for joining was to find fulfilment and contentment in making a contribution in life. Her grandfather was a Rotarian and Rotary was always a part of their family life as she was growing up. She is a Senior Personal Assistant at KPMG which she joined at a time the company was moving to a new building at Barangaroo and worked on the transition process.  Prior to working at KPMG she worked as a Travel Agent for American Express.
Amy is a keen foodie and has a real interest in making preserves.  Her ambition is to one day own her own business in a place like Mudgee, selling preserves and other produce. She writes a food blog called “Miss Brittain’s Kitchen” which can be found at http://missbrittain.com.au .
Amy is looking forward to her involvement with Northbridge Rotary Club.

Don Landers was the second Member Behind the Badge. Born in Northbridge in 1934, Don considers himself a ‘post-depressionist’!  He was educated at Miss Riach’s school at Northbridge, then Northbridge Primary, Forte Street and North Sydney Boys High before studying law, as did his father. Just out of university, he took over his father’s law practice, Marshall, Landers & Giblin, after his father died. After the partnership split, he then worked with Lee Jackson at Holman Webb. Don retired in 1999.

Don married Shirley Winn (aka Shush) in 1961 and they have 3 children. He is a Charter Member of Northbridge Rotary Club which makes him one of the oldest members of the club. He has served 12 years on the Board – 11 years as secretary and 1 year as a director. In 1992 he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, and the President’s Cup on numerous occasions.

Don has a long history of community involvement – secretary of the Terry Hayes Memorial Scholarship, secretary of the Norman Landers Memorial Library (now Northbridge Library), Lions Club, NSW Federation of Soccer Clubs, as Community Representative on the School Council of NPS, to name just a few organisations.

In 2004 Don was acknowledged as Willoughby’s Citizen of the Year.

Barry Anderson thanked both Amy and Don for giving us an insight into their lives.

Soar and Roar

Special Olympics Australia Athletes to Soar and Roar
from Kirribilli and Luna Park sites!

On Sunday 9 December 2018, luxury car brands and motorbikes from around NSW will make their way to Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the ‘Soar and Roar’ festival to celebrate Special Olympics Australia Athletes, their families, support networks and importantly to raise much-needed funds.
100% of the money raised through donations from participating motorcar drivers, motorbike participants and event attendees, will go towards the creation of an arena for athletes to exercise, have fun and make life-long friends.

Two sites in the North Sydney area will form the start for some of the event participants.  Broughton Park at Kirribilli will be the starting point for Team “Lotus” with approximately 20 cars expected to participate.  Around the corner at Luna Park, athletes will climb on to 25+ high powered motorbikes – for a trip of their lifetime.

Please donate and give generously at the following site: https://www.soarandroar.com.au/donation

The Rotary Club of Northbridge, in conjunction with North Sydney, North Sydney Sunrise, Mosman and Chatswood Rotary Clubs will be coordinating the event at the two venues on the day.
