Club Meeting News

Welcome
President Peter Antaw welcomed the only guest, Sally Hetherington from the charity Human and Hope Association.

Toast
Kim Wilkins proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Dubbo South, which was chartered in 1966. The club raises funds through various projects including a 4WD rally around the area and a black tie Ball. It supports RFDS and the local hospital and recently raised $30,000 (matched with $30,000 from a sponsor) for local drought relief.

Club business
President Peter mentioned that Vicki recently fell and fractured her ankle.

Susan Law asked for help with collecting amenity kits for young people entering Taldumande houses.

Luke Keighery reported that, at a recent Mary’s House fundraising event, he had won a voucher for a commercial photography session. He raffled it to members and raised $250 (thanks to PP John Bolton) for the club’s Charities Account.

Eleanor Chevor reported on her visit to RC of Wellington accompanied by her two sisters, and Kim Wilkins and Michael Bartok. They had donated several Prom dresses, helped feed 110 children at the barbecue, and also visited a farm and an aged care facility.

Rob Coote noted that several club members were visiting Wellington and Dubbo on October 16 and 23 to assist with school visits to the Dubbo Zoo. The Wellington club also needed help on October 30 when 200 pupils were expected at the Zoo. Rob noted that RC Wellington could also do with help with barbecues on clearance sale and market days.

Rob Coote said that our club would be holding a Drought Relief bucket appeal at the Plaza on October 19 and 20.
President's Message

Last Monday I went to the Zone Presidents' meeting at North Sydney Leagues. It was chaired by Ward Pollard, our Zone Assistant Governor. The main discussion was on D Caf, a café for Dementia sufferers and their Carers. Three clubs are getting together to progress the initiative with a growing realisation that it needs an in depth understanding before any major commitment. Two of the Clubs had professionals in the field that could provide valuable input. There is a current proposal to have a D Caf in the Dougherty Centre in Chatswood.

The success of the Trivia night by Chatswood Sunrise was discussed with $7,000 raised and $6,000 given to Mary’s House. Our Club filled two tables on the night.

Some Rotary Clubs are struggling to maintain membership and are now proposing to get together to run various events including Pride of Workmanship. We are very fortunate to have maintained our numbers so we keep our momentum. Lane Cove Club reported on their International activities and like us they are competent in applying for global grants. They are doing a water supply in Timor Leste and are joining with our Club supporting Nusa Tenggara for projects in Flores, East Indonesia.

At the meeting I told of our Wellington effort and that prompted a discussion on the drought and the severe impact on families in country areas. I encouraged the Presidents to approach country Rotary Clubs as they are powerful contacts to identify ways to support drought affected communities.

On Tuesday, at our Club meeting, we heard from Kim and Eleanor on their visit last week to Wellington. They had a marvellous time, attending the Rotary meeting, being shown around a farm and seeing first-hand the beginnings of an aged care home that will incorporate a day care centre for young children. Rob Coote is organising future visits, not only to assist at the Zoo, but to help with other Wellington projects which the local Club is struggling to man. Anyone that takes part in our support for Wellington will have a memorable experience.

Guest Speaker - Sally Hetherington

Ros Virtue introduced guest speaker Sally Hetherington, CEO of Human and Hope Association, a Cambodia-based education and training charity.

Sally said she spent five years in Cambodia, the poorest country in Asia with 35% living in poverty. She had helped Human and Hope develop into an official NGO. However, she believed strongly that having unskilled foreign volunteers demotivated local Cambodian staff. All its Board and its 16 paid staff were now Cambodian and she had based herself in Sydney.
The charity has a range of programs for children including an English language program. They also provided vocational training, especially in sewing skills. Sally gave several examples of the charity helping people to move out of poverty; reducing domestic violence; improving road safety; and increasing farming efficiency.

Malcolm Lye thanked Sally for her presentation, saying that members were impressed by her work as an Australian in Cambodia and congratulating her on her principle of “locals only” for Board and staff members.

DID YOU KNOW

During the period from November 1988 to November 1994 the Club conducted an annual Calcutta Night on the night of the Melbourne Cup. It was usually a riotous night as the Golf Club usually had a Cup luncheon during the day and many of the Golf Club members stayed on to join us. It was distinguished as nobody really knew the rules of a Calcutta and we just followed P.P. John Downs. Sadly the last Calcutta was held in 1994 as the Golf Club’s lunchtime event became bigger and better and the caterer could not clear out the lunchtime crowd in time for our event to start at a reasonable time. However, over that 6 year period the Club raised $17,216 for the Charities Account.
