Rotary Club Meeting 23 July 2019 & President's Report

Welcome
President Peter welcomed club members and guests, PDG Jon Dodd, Robyn McBride and guest speaker Dr. Lindsay McBride.

Toast
Brian Robson proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Greater Sydney, one of the first online Rotary Clubs.

Announcements
Kim Wilkins reported a successful bookstall last weekend which raised over $660. Kim thanked all those who volunteered and whose efforts contributed to the success on the day.

Valda Andrews advised of a Rotary Film fundraiser night to be held at Cremorne Orpheum where funds raised will go towards the Polio Plus campaign. She was disappointed to report that the incidence of polio has increased from 11 to 56 cases in the past year, mainly in Pakistan.

PDG John Dodd gave an update of his club’s activities and support for Interplast and said he would be pleased if our club were to join with his in the support of Interplast.

Guest speaker
Dr Lindsay McBride spoke to us about Interplast - https://www.interplast.org.au/ - a volunteer organisation which takes teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to 17 countries across the Asia Pacific region to perform life-changing surgery and to provide medical training.

Sergeant’s Session
After yet another amusing session from Sergeant Peter Russell which filled the coffers, PP Paul Sullivan auctioned two lots of wine, the approximate $200 proceeds from which were added to the club’s Charities account.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

It is already a month since our Changeover at the Gunners Barracks. IPP Ranald Stewart and I were very pleased with the venue and I am sure all Rotarians and guests enjoyed the night as much as we did. Thanks again to Jon Gidney for organising and being the M/C.

My first Club meetings went well and I just loved the work of Sergeant Peter Russell with the new format using videos. Fay and I discussed the idea but Peter made it happen and also managed to extract some money to boost our Charities account.

Last week we held a long and productive Board meeting at Fay’s mother house in Marsfield. Your Directors have put real effort into planning the year ahead and all will be revealed as the year proceeds. At the meeting I was set the task of writing letters to two very special members of the Club, Lee Jackson and Don Landers who are both experiencing health issues.

Lee has resigned from the Club and the Board unanimously agreed to make him an Honorary member. Don just needed some TLC to lift his spirits so a little red wine was considered appropriate. With Don and Lee’s permission their letters are below:-

Dear Lee
Last night we had the first Board meeting of our Rotary year and I was sad to officially receive notification of your resignation from the Club due to ill health.

You have been a great member over the years and I remember with much pleasure your year as President. Your wit and humour at meetings and in the bulletin was not only entertaining but made sure our Club was vibrant and successful.

At the Changeover in 2002 you handed the Presidency to me and set a high standard which I tried to emulate. Like you, I enjoyed my year as President and I find myself again as President, this time for a short period as I will share the position with Peter Grinter and Malcolm Lye.

At the meeting our Board voted unanimously to make you an Honorary member of the Rotary Club of Northbridge which means we will send you bulletins and will always make you welcome at our meetings and functions.

And the second letter, below, to Don who is better and at home for a while before further medical intervention.

Dear Don
Last night we had the first Board meeting of our Rotary year and naturally, under welfare, we discussed the well-being of our popular and much loved Welfare Officer.

I was instructed to deliver to you ‘a wine that Don would like.’ I have chosen an interesting aged Bordeaux, which, perhaps at this stage, is to imbibe at a future time.

All of us at Rotary send our greetings and wish you a successful and speedy recovery. We look forward to your return home and to Rotary.

A matter discussed briefly at the Board meeting is our Bulletin. I am concerned that the Bulletin Editor, Helen, has been set too hard a task and is writing the Bulletin instead of being its editor. It is the Club members’ bulletin and it should have items relevant to our members and Rotary.

I am starting the change with a President’s Report and I have asked Don Landers to make regular contributions from our Rotary past. Naturally Don readily agreed so I now ask all members to help make the bulletin more appealing and worth reading.

So what can you all contribute? Have you been up to anything of late, do you have special interests and hobbies, have you a library of jokes that you can supply to our Editor, is there a Rotary event coming, just what does RYLA, RYDA, RAIC and RYPEN stand for?

To get us in the frame of mind I will repeat a remark of Lee Jackson in one of his president’s reports -

The Rotary BBQs are actually aphrodisiacal, when I get home the wife says get your clothes off. Mostly nothing happens but the idea is there’.

And finally, next Tuesday is a special event not to be missed. Two exceptional musicians who have both performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra are visiting to talk to us about the SSO and will play for us. Both musicians have extensive overseas experience. Louise Johnson is the former SSO Principal Harp with many solo performances and Janet Webb retired in 2016 as Principal Flute for the SSO after a 35 year career.

It will be a Partners’ Night and we will extend to 8.30pm to fully enjoy the evening.

Again, a night not to be missed!

President Peter

DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that our Club was first introduced to the amazing work undertaken for the benefit of the local community by StreetWork by former club member and Northbridge Marina Proprietor and Boat Builder Andrew Moncrieff during the Rotary Year 1995-1996. Since then the Club has donated a total of $150,796.50 to this charity.

Community - Cyclone Debbie Assistance Final Report

Funds raised by Northbridge Rotary via a bucket appeal at Northbridge Plaza have been put to good use as reported below.

During Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017, the Sarina Range in Queensland experienced a massive landslide that effectively cut off 16 families (30 students) from the school campus.  Education Queensland quickly established accommodation for the isolated students.  However, suddenly and rather traumatically, the 30 students and their families had to adjust to changed life circumstances, grief and loss, separation from their previous school community and increased cost of living to travel extended distances to access shops, doctors, workplaces and other social supports such as scouts, sporting activities and dance.

This project, funded by the Northbridge Rotary Club totalling $3255, provided support for children’s skill development (swimming classes) and social interaction with peers at Inter school athletic activities. These monies paid for bus services to transport children between schools, then on to the swim classes and their athletics carnival. Without this grant the school, P&C and students would have been financially disadvantaged and unable to provide the access and learning opportunities that were offered to the students at the temporary accommodation.

The Rotary Club of Sarina and the Swayneville State School students, parents, teachers and community are thankful to the Northbridge Rotary Club and Townsville District 9550 Disaster Management grants that facilitated the social, and emotional well-being of these school children, alleviated a potentially onerous financial burden on the P&C and parents who were already financially disadvantaged. Your financial and club support has provided joy, growth, opportunities, personal development, pride, skill and water safety in all the children of the Swayneville State School Campus. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Dianne Barnett
Secretary, Rotary Club Sarina, Qld
Outcome measure evaluation: The project success was measured through the implementation of the project plan within the time frame below.
  • May 2018: 24 children and 8 parents affected attended that inter-school athletics event at Sarina State School. The children participated in all events and several children were successful in securing places in the district events.
  • December 2018: 30 students from the Range campus attended all school swim classes held at the Sarina Swimming Pool over a seven- week period. These children were transported by bus and participated in classes with other students as well as attending their swim classes through the day. All students passed the required water safety standard requirement for their age.
  • Full acquittal of funds occurred in January 2019 for the bus services that took students between their accommodation, school and swimming.

Youth - Rotary Helps Local Youth Leadership Development
The Rotary Club of Northbridge is building on their long-standing support of youth with expanding support across 6 different youth specific, leadership and experience focus programs. The outcomes of these programs continue to motivate the club to build on these programs with increased support.

Among these programs are high school leadership, science, engineering and experience programs.  One of these programs is RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) aimed at year 9 & 10 who want to build their confidence and self-esteem. RYPEN provides young people the opportunity to build leadership potential, encourages them to explore their ideas in problem solving, team activities, and experiences that will assist them in forming their own values. RYPEN is about building confidence and developing skills to cope in a range of situations. The Rotary club of Northbridge has doubled it’s support of this amazing program from sponsoring 4 awardees each of the last 2 years to 8 awardees this 18/19 year. Follow this link https://rotarydistrict9685.org.au/page/rypen for more information about RYPEN.

Another program worthy of mention is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). RYLA is a transformational leadership program designed for young adults aged 18-27. This intensive program over 7 days, enabling leadership to grow and develop to its full potential. RYLA combines amazing Australian speakers with activities and challenges in a supportive environment. Unlike other programs, RYLA has a focus on practical hands-on opportunities testing leadership in a controlled environment. The RYLA program is unique in linking outcomes to self-improvement with considered reflection; building a better leader with the necessary skills for improving their leadership as they move forward in life. RYLA is run annually, with close to 90 candidates in Elanora Heights, on Sydney's Northern beaches; the Rotary Club of Northbridge has sponsored 9 RYLA awardees over the last 3 years. Follow this link http://d9685ryla.org.au/ for more information about RYPEN.

The Rotary Club of Northbridge is also supporting the initiation of the North Sydney Rotaract Club; a new Rotaract Club which is a driven community of young professionals aged 20-30 who are committed to creating social change in their community whilst developing as leaders. The inaugural meeting is scheduled for February 20th and the following links are available for further information.

The life changing effects of these sponsored Youth programs continues to motivate our club and members support; the Rotary Club of Northbridge will continue a focus on our local Youth and our leaders of tomorrow as one of the most rewarding areas where we support our community.
