Rotary Club Meeting 30th January 2018

Welcome

President Derek welcomed all members, guests Penny Lye, Denise, Luke Keighery and our guest speaker Sharrin Olivier from The Waverton Hub.

Toast
Garth Carter gave a toast to the Rotary Club of Nedlands, Perth, W.A.  The club is 50 years old, has approximately 35 members and meets at 7.30 am on Thursdays.  A weekly Swapmart held on Sunday mornings is a major fundraiser.  The club supports an orphanage in Kenya and has exchanged students with Brazil.

Announcements
President Derek spoke about the vision presentation last week and asked all those who had not completed the questionnaire handed out during the presentation to do so and return it to Ranald Stewart.

Kevin Tattrie introduced our RYLA recipients, Clare Paynter, Dylan Gillespie and Geoffrey Mai who spoke to us about their experiences at the RYLA camp. Clare is a Team Leader at Talumunde, Dylan has just left school and is involved with the Sutherland PCYC and Geoffrey, an enthusiastic sportsman, is a medical student.  They all found the camp challenging, exhausting and very rewarding and made many lasting friendships amongst the 75 youths at the camp.

Bob Farrar spoke about the upcoming Rotary Golf Day to be held on 24 Feb where 3 more volunteers are needed to help out on the day.  Please contact Bob if you can assist.

Alan Hession asked for the names of those who have booked to attend the district conference so he can arrange carpooling.

Garth Carter advised that a trip to the Rembrandt Exhibition has been organised for Monday 12 February.  Meet at the main door of the Art Gallery of NSW at 9.30 am. Please let Garth know if you will be attending.
Garth also advised that the Pride of Workmanship awards will be held on 20 February.  Please let Garth know if you have any nominations.

Rob Coote thanked the club for the flowers and support he received on the recent death of his mother. Rob also advised that the Seniors’ lunch is to be held on April 14 and still needs a co-ordinator. Please let Rob know if you can assist with this.

Guest Speaker - Sharrin Olivier - The Waverton Hub

Malcolm Lye introduced our guest speaker for the evening, Sharrin Olivier, a journalist and video maker who spoke to us on the topic of the Waverton Hub.  The Hub evolved after a group of Waverton locals banded together to assist an elderly lady remain at home after hospitalisation.  They saw an opportunity to set up a community ageing in place program, to help residents of Waverton and Wollstonecraft stay in their own homes and remain healthy and active within the community for as long as possible – something of an alternative to a retirement village or nursing home.
The Hub opened for membership in 2013 and by 2015 had over 300 members. The Hub doesn’t provide services, but aims to help each other to make life a little easier and more fulfilling by creating a “buddy” system whereby 6 people who live near each other can help one another, whether it’s to collect mail, water a garden, cook a meal or walk a dog for a neighbour who is away, ill or infirm.  Over the years they have also formed various groups and activities – walking groups, pilates, yoga, zumba, trips to museums etc, and other events.  You can check out their activities at http://wavertonhub.com.au/  .  The Hub has regular meetings, and produces a regular e-newsletter which is sent to all members, and letterboxed to those who don’t have email.
The Hub gives people a sense of belonging, has active contributors, opportunities where members can learn new skills, as well as having people who are willing to help others and others who can be called upon when help is needed.  It caters for various interests - a speakers’ program, singing groups, games days and dinners, to name just a few.  With a maximum membership of 300 at a cost of $68/year, 80 members share the work to keep it running.
The model of The Hub has been so successful that it has been adopted by other communities, including in New Zealand.  It has also piqued the interest of politicians who are keen to learn about how the aged can live well and within their own communities.

Don Landers thanked Sharrin for her interesting and inspiring talk. The help and camaraderie The Hub has produced gives much food for thought for our own community.

International - Day for Girls Education & Training at Sagar Bakanje School, Nepal

In October 65 girls among 74 from classes 6 to 10, plus health worker & 8 health volunteers were given a lesson by Marie Egebjerg Jensen (from the Rotary Club of  Skivehus, Denmark) and we distributed DFG (Days for Girls) kits.

At the lesson the DFG kits were introduced to the students and they were shown how to use it along with calendar entry.

The health volunteer promised to tell other women in their areas of the DFG kits.
All went very well with additional girls wanting kits and presentation.

The DFG training and counselling was a huge success & another visit to Sagar Bakanje School, Nepal is planned in January-February 2018 to do further training, and to check they are using the kits and following the calendar of menstruation cycle.

ROTARY DISTRICT 9685 CONFERENCE: 10-11 March 2018
2018 Rotary District Conference will be held on 10th - 11th March 2018 at the Fairmont Resort Leura.

Members, family and friends are welcome. For further details and registration please visit the CONFERENCE WEB SITE: www.conference2018.rotarydistrict9685.org.au

Guest speaker will be Dr. Gill Hicks. Gill is considered to be one of the most thought provoking, powerful and life affirming speakers in Australia and the UK. She is globally known as an Advocate for Sustainable Peace and a valuable resource in Countering Violent Extremism.

Her devotion to making a personal greater contribution and positive difference to the urgency of building peace was realised when she was made permanently injured in the London terrorist Bombings on July 7th, 2005.

Her ‘lived experience’, from survival to rehabilitation as a double amputee created a clear demarcation from all she had known before the bombings, being at the helm of some of the UK’s most prestigious and respected institutions – including Publishing Director of the architecture, design and contemporary culture magazine, Blueprint, Director of the Dangerous Minds design consultancy and Head Curator at the Design Council, along with being one of the first women to be invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (the RSA).

Her 2nd Life is built on what she describes as a series of conscious choices, of mindfulness and being aware of the importance of the moment. Sharing what she has learnt about herself, about humanity and the extraordinary and what she believes is an inherent ability to not only face but to rise in the wake of adversity is not only inspiring, but it is a valuable insight into what is possible in life

1). Is it the TRUTH?
2). Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3). Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
