Rotary Club Meeting 11th July 2017

Welcome

President Derek opened the meeting and welcomed guests Veronica Bondarew, Penny Lye and Robert Jordan, our guest speaker.  He also took the opportunity to thank Nino for his continued efforts during each club meeting to keep everything running smoothly.

Toast
Paul Sullivan gave a toast to new Rotary International Global president Ian Riseley from the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria. Ian was a charter member of the club and some of the club’s activities include organising a Foodbank collection during the winter months for families in need, purchasing swags for the homeless, Angel Flight and providing bikes for Bayside Police patrols.

Announcements
Malcolm Lye mentioned the Probus Club of Northbridge is looking for an auditor.  Please see Malcolm if you are interested in volunteering for this position.

Alan Hession is waiting for responses for the event calendar. Please email Alan if you have anything you wish to add to the calendar for the coming year.

Rob Coote is seeking someone to share the position of co-ordinator of the Fireworks as it is a huge task.  Brian Robson volunteered for the position.

Ian Burnet advised that he had applied for a district grant for more water tanks in Timor L’este.

Kim Wilkins advised the Pride of Workmanship Awards are scheduled for October and asked for any nominations to be emailed to him.
He also reported that the visit to the ABC studios by 10 club members for the ‘Thanks God its Friday’ session last week was most enjoyable and dinner at a Malaysian restaurant afterwards was enjoyed by all.  He reminded everyone of the tour to the Maritime Museum this coming Sunday.

John Bolton & Michael Bartok spoke about the new system required for invoices to be claimed, i.e., every invoice required to be reimbursed needs to be signed by two directors prior to payment.

Doug Herridge advised all present that sadly his wife’s cancer has returned and that she is terminally ill.  He asked that everyone’s thoughts and prayers be with her and his family.

Guest Speaker - Robert Jordan, Community Ambassador - Ovarian Cancer Australia Organisation

Our guest speaker for the evening was Robert Jordan, Community Ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Australia Organisation (www.ovaniancancer.net.au) which is the only organisation that provides support to ovarian cancer patients, families and carers.  Robert spoke about the disease, its symptoms and risk factors, and the fact that as yet there is no test for early detection.  It has a very low survival rate, with few sufferers surviving longer than 5 years after diagnosis.  He said that treatment for the cancer had not changed much since the 1970-1980s and that government funding for research into ovarian cancer had halved in the past 10 years which has had a significant impact on finding better treatment options.  However they are hoping for an increase in the survival rate by 2025.
Robert also spoke about the psychology of being a carer. He lost his wife to ovarian cancer some years ago and spoke about his involvement in her care and what he considered important to support her – positivity, making the most of remission periods, going to doctors’ appointments and asking question, a mutual hobby, outtings, etc.

Karen Eurrell gave the vote of thanks.

Community - BowelCare Program 2017

As part of our community programs we are advising you of the Rotary BowelCare Program and that the BowelCare kits will be on sale at participating pharmacies for two months commencing 1st April, 2017.

Check with your local pharmacy or go to our website http://www.bowelcare.org.au for a listing of all participating pharmacies in your area.

This year’s BowelCare kit will cost only $15.00. This price includes pathology testing, with notification of your result to both yourself and your nominated doctor. Your result will be issued within 30 days of your test kit being received by pathology. Please use the pre-paid envelope provided within the kit package.
Throughout Australia, Rotary has chosen to update to the latest technology to screen for occult blood using a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT). This test is very easy to use, and requires no dietary or medication restrictions. The kit is a two day sampling, requiring one sample from two different days. Full detailed instructions are included within the kit package.

If you have any difficulty obtaining our BowelCare test kit, please phone the BowelCare office on (02) 4349 5555.

We trust that you will continue to look after your health by participating in our annual Rotary BowelCare Program.

Community - Rotary Lunch for Senior Citizens
Northbridge Rotary Club held another successful Senior’s luncheon on Saturday 3 March 2017 at St Marks Hall in Tunks Street Northbridge.

Inclement weather did not deter 80 guests from attending the annual lunch for seniors in our community. They were attended by over 30 hardworking Rotarians and friends, who served a delicious three course meal with  appropriate refreshments.

Guests were entertained by a talented young local violinist and they received gifts provided by Northbridge Compounding Pharmacy or a complimentary coffee card from the Inner Cravings Café  in the Northbridge Plaza.

A special prize was awarded to Mr  Geoff Lamb who, at 103 years of age, was the oldest  in attendance.
Mayor Giles-Gidney welcomed the guests on matters of interest, including Council merger developments. This was followed by an entertaining question and answer session on the reasons why she entered politics, moderated by Rotarian Peter McNair. The Mayor also thanked Rotary for their service to the community and all their work to make the lunch a success.

The following email from one of our guests summarised the day:

Dear Peter,

Please convey my sincere thanks to all Rotarians, photographer, musician and volunteers serving drinks, for their generosity of their time and hard work and to Pat for the lift.

Food was delicious and was served with smile. This type of function gives seniors an opportunity to meet people and discuss their interests and build up friendships.

Thanks.
Kind Regards,

Shirin(kanji).

Once again, the lunch was an entertaining and successful day for all concerned.
